7 Warning Signs You Have a Blocked Drain
Blocked drains rarely happen overnight. In most cases, there are warning signs days or even weeks before a full blockage brings everything to a standstill. The trouble is, most people don't recognise them until they're standing in a puddle of something they'd rather not think about.
We've been unblocking drains across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and the rest of Yorkshire for years. Here are the seven signs we tell every homeowner to watch out for.
1. Slow Draining Water
This is the most common early warning sign, and the one most people ignore. If your sink, bath or shower is taking noticeably longer to drain than it used to, something is restricting the flow. It might be a build-up of hair in the trap, grease coating the inside of the pipe, or something more stubborn further down the line.
Don't just wait for it to sort itself out. It won't. A slow drain today is a blocked drain next week.
2. Bad Smells Coming from Drains
If there's a foul smell coming from your sink, shower or outside drain, that's decomposing waste sitting in the pipe. Food scraps, grease, soap residue and other debris get trapped in the pipe and start to break down. The smell is the first thing you'll notice before the blockage gets worse.
In older Leeds properties, especially Victorian terraces with original clay pipes, we see this regularly. The pipes have rougher internal surfaces that catch debris more easily than modern plastic.
3. Gurgling Sounds
When you hear gurgling or bubbling from your drains, plughole or toilet, that's air being trapped and displaced by water trying to get past a partial blockage. It's essentially your drainage system telling you something is in the way.
Pay particular attention if the gurgling happens when you're not using that specific fixture. If flushing the toilet makes the kitchen sink gurgle, you've likely got a blockage in a shared section of pipe further downstream.
4. Raised Water Levels in the Toilet
If the water level in your toilet bowl is higher than normal after flushing, or it rises before slowly draining away, there's a partial blockage in the soil pipe or the main drain. This is one to act on quickly. A toilet that's slow to drain today can overflow tomorrow, and that's a mess nobody wants to deal with.
5. Damp Patches or Wet Spots Outside
If you notice patches of damp ground, unexplained puddles, or areas of your garden that are always soggy even when it hasn't rained, you could have a cracked or blocked drain leaking underground. This is particularly common across West Yorkshire where we have heavy clay soil that shifts with the seasons, putting pressure on older pipe joints.
Left unchecked, a leaking drain can undermine foundations, attract rats, and cause serious structural damage. If you spot persistent damp patches near your property, it's worth getting a CCTV drain survey to find out what's going on below the surface.
6. Recurring Blockages
If you've unblocked a drain yourself and it keeps coming back, the blockage you cleared was only part of the problem. There's likely a deeper issue: tree root ingress, a collapsed section of pipe, a displaced joint, or a build-up that your plunger can't reach.
We see this a lot in properties across Headingley, Chapel Allerton and Roundhay where mature trees send roots straight into the drainage runs. The roots find the tiniest crack in a pipe joint and work their way in. You can clear the symptoms, but until you deal with the root cause (quite literally), the problem will keep coming back.
7. Multiple Fixtures Affected at Once
If more than one fixture is draining slowly or backing up at the same time, the blockage is in your main drain rather than an individual branch pipe. When flushing the toilet causes the shower to back up, or running the washing machine makes the kitchen sink overflow, you've got a shared drainage problem that needs professional attention.
This is the point where a plunger and some drain cleaner aren't going to cut it. You need high-pressure jetting to clear the main line properly.
